An Axminster man who survived a horrific road accident thanks to Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance was among the cyclists completing the charity’s Coast to Coast Challenge on Sunday (April 23).

Dave Richards rode 55 miles from Watchet Harbour in Somerset to West Bay in Dorset, raising more than £460 for the air ambulance.

He was cheered on by family and friends who had supported him as he recovered from the life-changing injuries he suffered less than two years ago.

Dave said: “If it was not for the skills and prompt action by the Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance I wouldn't be here. They saved my life.

“One sunny July morning in 2021 I was cycling with my two friends, Tony and Peter, when we were mown over by a speeding drunk driver on his phone. So I'm doing the Coast to Coast challenge to raise as much money as possible for this worthwhile cause.”

As a result of the accident Dave lost an eye and would also have lost his left arm if it had not been saved by surgeons' skills. All his ribs were shattered and he had to undergo several operations during his journey to recovery - but he was determined to get back into the saddle and take part in the Coast to Coast ride.

“I am so pleased to be able to do this,” he said. “The accident changed my life but, thanks to the Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance I got to hospital. Since then, I've gradually pushed myself down the rehabilitation route, and with time and the support of many professionals, friends and a loving family I'm able to take on physical challenges like this once more.”

The Coast to Coast event is organised by the Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance every year. It is not a race, but a ride through some of the area’s most beautiful countryside, with an 11-mile route and the more challenging 55-mile option, both finishing at the same point. The longer route includes quiet back roads, steep climbs and dramatic descents, with pit stops along the way for rest and refreshment.

Dave had set himself a modest fundraising target of £250, but had already received £460 in online donations before the ride took place. His sponsorship page can be found on the Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance’s website.
