The owner of a Seaton hotel has raised money for the local cancer charity that supported her while she was having treatment.

Lisa Barry served nearly 100 breakfast baps, teas and coffees at The Mariners Hotel on Seaton seafront to raise money for FORCE Cancer Charity.

In just two hours, she and her team raised more than £700 towards the charity’s Great Devon Breakfast campaign.

Lisa Barry said: “We put the word out there and hoped we’d get a few people in but we never imagined it would go that well."

She was diagnosed with cancer in September 2021 and needed two operations, chemotherapy, radiotherapy and immunotherapy treatment.

Much of her treatment took place in Exeter but she was able to have some at the cancer hub at Ottery St Mary Hospital, where FORCE supports the nurses delivering chemotherapy and offers free counselling, complementary therapies and expert physio and exercise advice.

Lisa added: “That’s when I found out about FORCE. The volunteers at Ottery are so lovely, working there out of the goodness of their heart. They told me all about the charity.

“Someone rang to ask how I was feeling and I was offered support. FORCE is just so caring.”

Lisa has been at the Mariners for four years. She has coped with the Covid pandemic and cancer during that time but remains upbeat.

“I’m all good now, clear of cancer and looking forward to a busy season."

Teamwork was the key to her Great Devon Breakfast success. Husband Dean, daughter Macey, mum and dad Margaret and Greg Clarke, brother Matthew Clarke and dishwasher extraordinaire Dasha Reilly all pulled together to cope with massive support for the event.

Local businesses also donated food and members of the Axe Valley Friends of FORCE group were among those who enjoyed a great foodie fundraiser.

Naomi Cole, FORCE Community Fundraising Coordinator, said: “We are so grateful to the magnificent Mariners team for all their hard work in putting on a hugely successful Great Devon Breakfast.

“They must have been rushed off their feet and we are blown away by the fantastic total raised.

“Sincere thanks to the local businesses - Tesco in Seaton, Anton’s Butchers from Colyton and RD Johns Foodservice - who generously supported this event and of course to everyone who went along to enjoy a breakfast bap.

“The Great Devon Breakfast campaign has raised more than £5,000 this year and we are incredibly grateful to each and every person who has contributed to this very tasty amount.
