‘Very witty, clever script, brilliantly acted’ Darren Lee-Cole, NY Soho Theatre

In 2019 Amendments achieved great success with a sell-out tour, and they will be back to spark controversial debate. The diminishment and arguments of language within the workplace, sexism, and gender/s are some of the issues to be explored on a journey of dazzling wordplay, which searches for what is and isn’t acceptable to say.

From the moment the drama begins the audience is exposed to an unrelenting bombardment of dialogue and comedy; the opening scene is situated within a rigid office environment with Kenneth, the company manager, reprimanding his subordinate colleague, John, over the hot topic of harassment. Split opinions and questions are already generated from the very start: Has ‘political correctness’ gone mad? Is censorship overshadowing common sense? Or are the vital components to protecting our vulnerable from prejudice?

amendments: A Play On Words is written by Matt Roberts and directed by Tom Stabb. As regular attendees of the world-famous Edinburgh Fringe Festival, members of Middleweight Theatre have performed all over the UK after their comedy debut ‘Sound Bite’ in 2013. Core members include Al Wadlan, Chrissy Slevin and Jen Wetherhead. They cover vital roles in the company, including performing, stage management, set/prop design, costume design, LFX ad technical.

The cast is soon to be announced.

Writer Matt Roberts states ‘’We believe in producing thoughtful and funny theatre that’s both topical and relevant to our audience. Our aim is to encourage debate and exploration through a variety of topics, in this case the use of language and political correctness. As a writer I love to lead our people in one direction and turn that on its head at a hinge point in the show which may lead them to question both theirs and other attitudes in quite a probing way.’’

Director Tom Stabb also says ‘’What we do is always based on humour and there is nothing we like more than seeing our audiences leave the show having just been thoroughly entertained but also debating with their friends about what they have just seen over a pint afterwards! And this is exactly what we saw previously with our audiences for Amendments. We can’t wait for more people to join the discussion.’’ Tickets for amendments: A Play On Words are on sale.
