The founder of Axminster and Lyme Cancer Support, Mary Kahn, has received a BBC Radio Devon Make a Difference Award in the Volunteering category.

And in a separate awards scheme, her team of volunteers have also been recognised for their outstanding work.

Mary was presented with the trophy at a ceremony at Powderham Castle on September 27 in recognition of her outstanding work leading the charity.

She had been nominated by Tim Symes, a client who received support from ALCS while dealing with his cancer.  Tim died in July, but  his sister Janice attended the ceremony.

Mary said: “It is very humbling to be recognised like this and in amazing company of all those at the event. Tim who nominated me said I made him feel included and welcome and that it is okay not to be okay. It is important that we offer a safe environment and we hope to support those affected by cancer, in whatever form that support means the most to them.”

Just over a week after the BBC awards, the ALCS volunteer team received three awards at a celebration event organised by the Volunteer Centre Dorset.

Midweek Herald: ALCS volunteers Nigel Ball, Kelsey Lawrence, Isabel Pound, Kevin Townsend, Lynne Pickett and Anne

Anne Townsend received the Andy Jacobs Legacy Award for wellbeing and mental health in volunteering, Kelsey Lawrence was named Volunteer of the Year, and the whole team received an award for their 'outstanding volunteering contribution' to the local community.

Mary Kahn said: ”It is amazing to have our volunteers recognised. Volunteers make a huge contribution to our community and we could not offer the wide range of services without them.

“ALCS extends heartfelt gratitude to the Volunteer Centre Dorset for recognising the invaluable contributions of their volunteers. The charity also wishes to thank the local community for their ongoing support, which enables them to continue their vital work.”

Axminster and Lyme Cancer Support works across East Devon and West Dorset to help people with cancer and their families. The charity is working to expand its services and looking forward to opening its own centre in November, where a number of services and resources will be available
