Axminster and District Choral Society will present a concert of works by Bach, Vivaldi and more on Saturday, (November 18).
The choir will be joined by professional soloists and orchestra. The programme features Bach’s famous cantata “Wachet Auf” (“Sleepers, Awake!”), in which a Lutheran hymn tune is set in a variety of ingenious ways.
Also included are Vivaldi’s Credo and Magnificat, which are almost operatic in style, and a short work by the less well-known Dieterich Buxtehude. A fantastic organist as well as a composer, Buxtehude was so respected in his time that Bach journeyed on foot for twelve days across Germany just to meet him.
The performance will take place in the Minster Church, Axminster, at 7:30 pm. Tickets, priced £15 and £12, are available from Archway Bookshop, Trinity Square, Axminster, on line at www.axminsterchoral.co.uk or from members of the choir.
