Simon Jupp MP is calling for Boots UK to reconsider plans to close Sidmouth’s Woolbrook Pharmacy.

The MP for East Devon has written to Sebastian James, managing director of Boots UK, with a request for the company to reconsider its plans.

A closure notice was advertised in the Boots pharmacy on Woolbrook Road at the start of November, leading to concerns from residents who face difficulties accessing the alternative Boots store on Fore Street.

Following the announcement, Mr Jupp wrote to the managing director on November 6 to express his disappointment with the decision and reaffirm his support for the pharmacy.

He also asks Mr James directly what the reason is for closing the store.

The Herald contacted Boots to ask why the store is closing. Its response was because it has two stores in close proximity to each other; the other Boots store is in Sidmouth High Street, which includes a Boots Eyecare store next door.

After highlighting the direct complaints he has received from customers who are worried about how they will collect their prescription medicines, as well as acknowledging the store’s local popularity, Mr Jupp has asked for more information on the decision and whether it could be reversed.

He said; “I am deeply disappointed by Boots’ sudden decision to close the Woolbrook Pharmacy and the significant impact it will have on its loyal customers. The staff in there are fantastic, it’s very popular amongst locals and it provides an important service to the most vulnerable and elderly who can pick up their prescriptions with ease. I’m urging Boots to explain their decision and consider again whether it’s really in the best interests of the town.”

A spokesman for Boots Pharmacy told the Herald: "We continually evolve our store estate and our priority is making sure that our stores are in the right location and are able to offer our customers a consistently excellent and reliable service.

"Over the next year, we will continue to consolidate several stores which are near each other – the majority of which are within 2km. This will help us to focus our investment to create a consistently fresh and up to date environment for our customers as well as concentrating our team members where they are most needed.

"Pharmacy services will be continued at your nearest open store, where we continue to offer pharmacy services for customers and patients.

"We’d also like to reassure you that all team members have been offered opportunities in other stores in the local area. "
