Honiton Town Council have announced that the current town mayor, Helen Hurford, has resigned from her position.

In a post on Facebook this afternoon, Mrs Hurford announced that she is stepping down, after only being elected onto the council in June last year.

It goes on to say she will be moving into a different role and will 'continue to service this and the wider community but in a different capacity.'

She said she would like to thank everyone who has supported her and made her role so enjoyable, especially Honiton Town Crier Dave Retter.

Her statement said: "It is with mixed feelings of sadness and pride that I am resigning my position as Chairman, Mayor and Councillor of Honiton Town Council with effect from the 1st January 2024.

"The New Year brings a new career for me, whereby any political position is untenable.

"I am immensely proud to have served the town that I love as your Mayor and Councillor. The changes to the culture of the Town Council and its members have been transformational and I’m proud to have been part of this positive change.

"I leave Honiton Town Council in a position of strength and with Councillors whose intentions are for the good of this town.

"I will continue to service this and the wider community, but in a different capacity."
