A Devon MP has applauded the news of a confirmed opening date for Honiton police station's enquiry office.

Richard Foord, MP for Tiverton and Honiton, said: "Really good to see a firm date for the re-opening of Honiton's Police enquiry office.

"It is thanks largely to your feedback in a Police and Crime Commissioner survey."

Several police front desks have recently been launched across the Devon, Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly region, seen as a success for local authorities' initiatives.

The police and crime commissioner for Devon, Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, Alison Hernandez, said: “Our police enquiry officers will work with colleagues in the control rooms by handling non-emergency contact from the public and providing the local community with another contact option, which will improve the convenience of contacting the police and strengthen the service we offer.”

She said the community in Okehampton will be able to access policing closer to home when needing to report a crime or ask for advice, with their office already being announced.

A new physical point of contact will provide crime reporting, prevention advice, and victim services.

Initially, the service will operate from 10am to 3pm, Monday to Thursday, with plans to extend to a six-day week in the future.

More such services are in the pipeline including in Kingsbridge and Ilfracombe, scheduled to be operational before March 2024.

By 2025, this initiative will have created a total of 27 police front desks across Devon and Cornwall, increasing the region's capacity to serve its communities more intimately and efficiently.
