An inclusive volunteer group supporting veterans and their families has been named the first in the UK to earn a top national award.

Axminster Community Shed has achieved the Gold Standard in the UK Men’s Sheds Association Armed Forces Community Accreditation.

The programme launched nationally on September 15, 2025, coinciding with the 85th anniversary of the Battle of Britain.

Jason Vandersyde, trustee of Axminster Community Shed, said: "I’ve only been a trustee for under a year, but I’m incredibly proud to be part of something that means so much to our local community.

"This Gold Award shows what’s possible when a group of volunteers works with heart, purpose, and genuine care.

"We hope our achievement encourages other Sheds and community groups to see just how far they can go."

The award recognises exceptional support for serving personnel, veterans, reservists, and their families—offering a safe, welcoming space where people can regain confidence, share skills, and connect with others.

Members of the public are invited to celebrate the award at Community Shed Day at Axminster Tools, Unit 9A, Weycroft Avenue, on Saturday, June 20, where the Gold Accreditation will be formally presented at 12.30pm.

The UKMSA accreditation panel commended Axminster Community Shed for its dedication to inclusion, wellbeing, and practical support for the Armed Forces community—values that are deeply rooted in the group’s approach and activities.

Trustees say the award reflects the hard work and generosity of volunteers and members, particularly those supporting veterans transitioning to civilian life or coping with the long-term impact of service.

The organisation now sets a national benchmark and showcases the power of community spirit in Axminster.

The shed continues to welcome new members of all backgrounds, including veterans and their families, who want to meet others, learn new skills, or contribute to a friendly and supportive environment.
