Anybody can join in as long as they are in the town on the ninth day of the ninth month of the ninth year of the century.

For on that day, September 9, the Rotary Club of Axminster, in conjunction with the Axminster Photographic Group, is inviting all amateur photographers to take a snapshot of the town for future generations to see.

Your pictures will form part of the record of local life handed down in the archives of the town and from one generation of families to another.

The Midweek Herald is supporting the club's imaginative plans to involve the public - residents and visitors alike - in making history.

With all the pictures taken that Wednesday, the club is creating a DVD, a sort of time capsule, to be presented to the town's mayor to form part of Axminster's legacy to the future.

It will also be selling copies of the DVD in the run-up to Christmas to benefit local charities.

So one might nestle in your Christmas stocking at the end of the year, a collection of photographs to be handed down the generations.

Next week we shall be telling you how to join in the project to take a Snapshot of Axminster.
