Surely, as mayor, she should be welcoming inward investment to help the ailing economy of the town.

Whilst it is the case that many would have preferred a rival supermarket to be allowed to build here, the fact is that Tesco actually owns the land.

Whilst the supermarket itself will create some jobs and attract some people to the town (and there can be discussion over both those points) it is also going to enable a Jurassic Coast Visitor Centre to be built.

Its developer contribution, when added to the other funds already committed, will be enough to see the centre built, equipped and staffed by 2011.

The centre, which will also incorporate a Tourist Information Centre to replace the one recently closed down, is forecast to attract up to 70,000 tourists per year. In addition, this will be an all year market, not just a summer one.

Surely, that has to be good for the economy of the area!

Should we not be encouraging investment and leaving questions about the extent of it to Tesco's shareholders ?

However, if Mayor Semple has a viable alternative plan for regenerating the town, I am sure we should all be very pleased to hear it.
