Nigel Bishop, of Recoco, takes a look at the East Devon property market.
East Devon enjoys some of the most scenic coastline in England and hosts The Jurassic Coast - the first designated English World Heritage site - and about one hundred miles of the South West Coast Path from Exeter to Weymouth.
Add the fact the climate is considered the best in the country and it is hard to imagine a better place to live.
The thriving communities along the water’s edge benefit from the tourist industry - each with its own character and a strong sense of community that evolves in tandem with the many visitors.
Architects and builders in Budleigh Salterton and Sidmouth have forged the character of many twentieth century homes - Hatchard Smith in Budleigh and Sampson in Sidmouth. Both epitomise the quality of the properties that are as appealing today as they were when built.
The steep streets of Lyme Regis, winding through the eclectic array of shops, and the cobbled paths in Beer all pass timeless cottages for which Devon is renowned as they lead to the harbours and sea. Behind the quaint facades many sport 21st century technology and living styles. It is the outdoors, the scenery, the peace and views that attract many people to buy whilst knowing it is very accessible to the rest of the country via motorway, train and plane.
A view of the sea always captures people’s imagination, so a few opportunities currently available include: Cliff Cottage in Foxholes Hill, Exmouth. Knight Frank Exeter (01392 423111) are the agents. A better view is hard to imagine. The three-bedroom house benefits from a guest annexe and a potential building plot in the garden.
Harrison Lavers and Potbury, in Sidmouth (01395 516633), are selling a second-floor flat in the recognisable Fortfield Terrace overlooking the tennis courts, bowls lawns, cricket pitch and out to sea. Perfect retirement or second home with little to do but enjoy what Sidmouth and East Devon have to offer.
In Budleigh Salterton, David Rhys (01392 444011), has an equally stunning apartment with sea view in Chapel Hill. The first floor of a purpose-built residence of just two apartments just a short stroll from the busy High Street and seafront.
The draw of the sea appeals to all ages and East Devon can deliver the services needed for all ages – where else is there to go!! Home: “It’s all about coming home”.
