THE speed limit on the A35 at Kilmington is being reduced after years of campaigning by residents.

And around 200,000 is being spent on safety measures, which will include anti-skid surfacing and better signage.

The Highways Agency has confirmed the speed limit will be reduced from 60 miles per hour to 50. Improvements will also be made to the bus stop and an uncontrolled pedestrian crossing will be installed.

Kilmington parish councillor David Vickers, who has fought for a lower speed limit on the road, welcomed the news.

He said: "We are delighted with the news, but just think more needs to be done. We would like it to go even lower.

"It's a long time coming. There have been so many accidents and shunts there that it's obviously dangerous. Hopefully this will reduce the number of accidents."

He said he would like to see a dedicated crossing put in place.

A spokesman for the Highways Agency said: "The safety improvements come out of a study done in 2002 over the entire A30/A34. Various safety improvements were recommended and carried out in order of priority.

"The improvements at Kilmington are now ready to be implemented.
