Go-ahead resort continues to buck the national trend of high street closures
Trend bucking continued in Seaton last week with the opening of yet another new shop.
The resort has recently seen a high street revival with more stores and restaurants setting up, in contrast to the run of closures in many shopping centres across the country.
The latest business to be officially opened by Mayor Gaynor Sedgwick was WithaGee Glass Art.
Local woman Gill (with a ‘G’) Hamlett discovered the delights of fused glasswork after attending courses and began selling her original designs in 2010.
She said: “I am delighted to be opening the Studio at No 1 Cross Street and so is my husband, Dave as there is no room left at home!
“I am expecting a glass fusing kiln – any day now - and am keen to create larger glass pieces and experiment with new designs. I hope people will come to see what I am creating, then come back to see how it turned out.”
A keen open water kayaker, Gill gets much of her inspiration from the sea. Landscapes and seascapes, boats and coastal activities inform her work and her quirky depictions of these scenes.
She likes her work to be playful and fun and enjoys experimenting with colours and textures of the glass, aiming to incorporate the sparkle and energy of the sea within the glass itself. She is open to commissions or subjects that stretch the imagination and involve new challenges.
Cutting the opening ribbon Cllr Sedgwick said: “I am delighted to see yet another quality business opening in Seaton. We continue to buck the trend when it comes to new businesses investing in Seaton, it’s definitely becoming the place to live, visit and invest in. I wish WithaGee every success.”
