Honiton cyclists aiming to collect 2,000 for Baton charity in epic John O’Groats to Land’s End fund-raiser.

The next few hours could be anxious ones for three men from Honiton who are embarking on 952 mile cycle in aid of the Baton charity.

Pub landlord Lester Curnow, 37, of The Otter Inn, and his assistant bar manager, Paul Sellick, 25, will tomorrow (Saturday) set off from John O’Groats in a bid to reach Land’s End on October 13.

They are being aided by support vehicle driver Dave Pople.

The effort aims to raise 2,000 for the Baton and a charity night at the Otter Inn will mark the completion of the End to End challenge on October 29. Tickets are on sale now - on a bookings only basis.

Father-of-four Mr Curnow told the Midweek Herald: “Staying safe is my biggest fear - my wife has just had twins! The only other worry is severe weather.

“I was really, really excited up until about five days ago. Now I’m really anxious.”

Mr Sellick said: “I’m excited, but that may change when I get there and I see the sign that says ‘Land’s End 952 miles’.

“I know I’ve got to cycle that.”

During the challenge, the cyclists aim to cover distances between 97 and 65 miles a day.

They think they will average 15 miles an hour, on a good day.

Mr Curnow said: “The Baton isn’t just about raising money, it’s about raising awareness and we will be giving out leaflets along the route.”

The charity night will start at 7pm and consist of a quiz, raffle, buffet and music. Tickets cost 10 each. Reserve a seat by calling (01404) 42594.
