Liz Tiarard provides a round-up of what’s going on at churches in and around Honiton during August.

August seems to be a very quiet month; many of our local folk are on holiday, even as we welcome visitors to our lovely town.

However, there are still some gems to catch up with :-

On Wednesday, August 4, the Goldfinch Ensemble will give a lunchtime concert at 1pm in St Paul’s Church. Light lunches will be available in the Narthex from noon. These will be at an extra charge. Tickets for the concert are available from the churchwardens at 4, and monies raised are for St Paul’s.

The annual team barbeque will be held at Jackson’s Nursery, in Combe Raleigh, on Friday, August 6, 6.30pm for 7pm. Tickets cost 6 and can be obtained from churchwardens.

Gittisham is holding a Flower and Produce Show from 2pm on Saturday, August7, in the village hall. There will be stalls and teas.

Gittisham Craft Club’s cream tea is on Sunday, August 15, at 21 Cypress Close, Gittisham Vale, by kind permission of Margaret and Michael Hawkins. All are welcome. Proceeds are in aid of the Church Kneeler Fund. Everyone is welcome.

On Tuesday, August 17, at 1pm, John Mingay is giving an organ recital at St. Paul’s Church. I am told this is a programme of light musical items. John was for many years the organist and director of music at St. Paul’s and it is largely due to his vision and dedicated fund raising that this magnificent instrument was installed 10 years ago, which has been much acclaimed by many of the finest organists in the land. Tickets are available from the churchwardens or the parish office. Light lunches will be on offer from noon at an extra cost. Again, this is in aid of St Paul’s funds.

Gittisham is very busy during August ----on the 21st there is a coffee get-together with a bring and buy stall outside the church (inside if wet).

During August the normal times for Sunday Celebration and Sunday Celebration + at St Paul’s carry on as usual and, of course, a very warm welcome will be extended to any visitors. Look at the church noticeboards to be reminded on which Sundays these occur.

I am sure that all the members of all our Honiton churches join me in wishing everyone a happy and refreshing holiday month, whether here or away.
