Don’t leave valuables on show.

POLICE are urging shoppers to empty their cars before a thief does this Christmas.

Devon and Cornwall Constabulary has launched a seasonal campaign urging shoppers to be on their guard for opportunistic thieves targeting vehicles.

Bob Bunney, force crime reduction advisor, said: “Theft from vehicles in Devon and Cornwall remains low but the opportunity for this type of crime traditionally rises during Christmas.

“Shoppers should be aware and keep purchases with them rather than leave them on display in vehicles. This will reduce the opportunity for crime.”

Police are recommending that members of the public ensure that their car windows are closed and doors are locked.

It is important to keep presents and other valuables out of sight.

Park in a well-lit area and try to plan shopping trips so that bulky items are collected at the end of the day rather than being stored in the car.

Make a note of any serial numbers of the valuable items.

Mr Bunney added: “By taking simple precautions people can help police to reduce crime while preventing the heartache of losing valuable or sentimental gifts over the festive season.”

Police will be continuing to patrol car parks over the festive period.
