Petition launched to ‘keep historic firm and carpet manufacture in Axminster’.

Hundreds turned out today (Saturday) to support the campaign to save Axminster Carpets.

Some 400 workers are fighting for their jobs after the world famous firm announced its intention to call in administrators.

Many of the employees and their families staged a rally in the Guildhall car park this morning, before parading through the town.

They were gathering signatures on a petition calling for Government to do more to support the carpet industry in England and “keep this historic firm and carpet manufacture in Axminster”.

Union officials said they were delighted with the turnout and stressed that they are still hopeful talks between various parties to save the company will bear fruit.
