Grants sought for art project at derelict Websters Garage site

A SCHEME to rid Axminster of its biggest town centre eyesore is stepping up a gear.

Axminster Arts’ plan to construct a colourful installation at the entrance to the long-derelict Websters Garage site is back on track after recent delays.

Project manager Tim Leat said the bad weather and other factors had held up the next phase of the scheme – to obtain quotes from local builders for the temporary structure.

He said: “This is necessary before obtaining tenders from local artists to provide initial designs for consideration and pledging to the running of planned workshops.

“Whilst an initial funding application has been made to Making It Local full costings are required before Axminster Arts will be advised if the application is successful. In the meantime other sources of funding are being explored.

“Whilst some builders have already been approached to progress the project I would welcome hearing from any local builders who would be interested in becoming involved and any organisations that would be willing to pledge a grant or become involved in the project.

“If the necessary funds can be raised and artists secured, it is hoped that the planned workshops can take place during this year’s school summer holidays and the mural in place before the end of this year.”

Mr Leat stressed that the long-term plan for the site was still for it to be developed commercially.

He added: “But until this happens Axminster Arts hope that their idea will make this area of the town more attractive for residents and visitors alike as well as giving the whole town an opportunity to be involved in a real community project.”
