Axminster police get 'tough'

AXMINSTER police is calling on youngsters in the area to take part in the Royal Marines Commando Challenge in October.

Neighbourhood beat manager Pc Kevin Bennett is organising a team for the 10k challenge and is calling on people aged between 16 and 21 to take part.

He said: "The course is one used daily by the Royal Marines and will be guaranteed to be tough. You don't need to be physically fit to join, but you must be prepared to train to become so - as the challenge involves a 3 km multi terrain run to a 4 km obstacle course, then another 3 km run back to the starting point.

"The obstacles include steep terrain, infamous 'sheep dip,' an underwater tunnel that has to be completed by each member"

He added: "From experience I can say that those who took part in both the training and the event in 2009, thoroughly enjoyed the experience. They became fitter, had a great laugh, and made new friends along the way - whist raising over �2,000 for the Commando Challenge chosen charities."

Training will take place every Tuesday evening from June 29 through to the event on Sunday, October 10.

Training sessions are free, but those taking part need to raise a personal sponsorship of at least �40 for the chosen charities.
