THE opening hours of the front desk at Axminster Police Station could be slashed to six hours a week.

THE opening hours of the front desk at Axminster Police Station could be slashed to six hours a week.

The Midweek Herald has previously reported police station opening hours across the Axe Valley could be drastically cut in a bid to save money.

In Seaton, the hours could be chopped from 30 to 10 hours a week, and in Axminster from 30 to six.

Officers are currently speaking to key members of the community as front counter hours are being reviewed.

Sergeant Pete Trudgeon, based at Axminster, said: "I would like to clarify that it is just the front counter service being reviewed, not the closing of the station.

"Officers will still be working from the station 24 hours a day.

"Feedback so far has suggested that residents would like to have the neighbourhood team based in the town centre, such as in shops or business premises."

Other people have suggested the station be open in the evenings, instead of during the day, so working people would be able to visit them more easily.

Superintendent Peter Strawbridge has said the force was reviewing when and where people have face-to-face contact with police, to give local people best value for money.

Any changes to the service are expected to be introduced by 2011.
