School’s head praises all involved in creating the new area - volunteers ‘worked their socks off’, he said
Axminster Primary Academy’s new garden area was officially opened today (Wednesday, November 29).
Staff, pupils, parents and volunteers have all helped to transform a large outdoor site into a more suitable space to aid learning through play in a creative environment.
Today PTFA chairman Julie Beviss and Mole Avon store manager Simon Prager cut a ribbon to declare it open.
Earlier head teacher Ross Minton praised all those involved in the project, especially early years teacher Ursula Powell who led the way in helping to create a garden they could now use throughout the year.
He also thanked local firms who provided materials for the project – Mole Avon, Westcrete and Bradfords - and the PTFA for donating £1,000.
Mr Minton said the project embodied “everything that is community spirit” and he praised all the volunteers who ‘worked their socks off’.
Mrs Powell, whose husband Stacey spent many hours on the project, thanked all the helpers.
“I am amazed at everybody’s generosity,” she said,
“Mole Avon, through manager Simon Prager, have been incredible and generous in their support for this project. They have supplied us with thirty five, 100 litre bags of bark, seven wooden planters of various sizes, two children’s wheelbarrows, two trays of plants and flowers, two large bags of compost, tubing to aid play and a can of paint for our benches.
Bradfords, via manager Dean Hodder, have provided us with several pallets to use as storage for our construction area and a bulk bag of gravel for our new digger pit.
Westcrete have provided us with a bulk bag of pebbles to create a dry river bed around our ‘wobbly bridge’ and membrane.
The PTFA at our school have funded £1,100 worth of bark to cover 22 cubic metres”
During opening Axe Valley Academy music teacher Jonathan Jevons and students entertained on Taiko drums and steel pans..
