Jubilee bunting set to stay flying for the rest of the summer

AXMINSTER’S Jubilee bunting looks set to remain flying proudly for the rest of the summer.

An appeal to officials not to take it down came from town crier Nick Goodwin.

He said it looked so fantastic the council should let it stay up throughout the European football competition and the Olympic Games.

“It would be good to keep it – it makes the town look so nice,” he said.

His suggestion got an enthusiastic reception at last week’s town council meeting when Mayor Andrew Moulding said they should tell those responsible for the bunting and flags that the council agreed they should be left in place.

Cllr Graham Godbeer said it could also be used to celebrate the town’s Axe Vale Festival.

He added: “I think the town looked really good and we should thank all those who took part in the jubilee celebrations – it was a fantastic effort.”

Deputy Mayor Jeremy Walden, who helped co-ordinate the town’s celebrations, said they had all gone very well.

“It was a good reflection on this town and what community is all about,” he said. “I want to thank all those involved.”

There was special praise for the work on putting up the decorations by town councillor Mervyn Symes and members of the local branch of the Royal British Legion.

After the meeting Cllr Symes told The Herald the bunting would be remain in place for the summer.

And he praised his team of helpers for putting up the decorations, including James Bostock, of Axminster Skip Hire, who provided the telehoist and shopkeeper Carol Clements for making the valance which was fitted around the war memorial on the Minster Green.
