Big turnout for the town’s annual service of remembrance as people wear their poppies with pride

AXMINSTER joined communities across the Axe Valley to honour the victims of war yesterday (Sunday).

Residents turned out in large numbers as members of the Royal British Legion and local uniformed organisations paraded down South Street to the parish church for the annual service of remembrance.

Standards were carried by RBL members Douglas Hull, Jim Partridge Hogbin and Leanne Rowley.

After the service the crowds gathered on the Minster Green for the exhortation, read by Legion secretary John Vanderwolfe, before the laying of poppy wreaths by representatives from the uniformed groups and civic leaders, including Mayor Andrew Moulding.

Officials said they were delighted with the large turnout and the continuing support for the ceremony by younger people.

Earlier a similar service of remembrance was held at St Gregory’s Church, Seaton, followed by the laying of

wreaths at the war memorial.
