FIRE and ambulance services held a joint training exercise under a railway bridge near Kilmington last week.

The exercise, which replicated workmen trapped beneath the bridge at Slym Lakes, put the local emergency services to the test.

Site safety officer Nick Thomas of BAM Nuttall, the principal contractor for the re-doubling of the rail line, said they had stringent safety planning in place, but wanted to test their emergency response plans.

He said: "To test these out and to provide local emergency services with an opportunity to carry out training with a realistic scenario in a challenging location, we arranged the exercise for this evening.
