MORE than 1,700 was raised by a sponsored walk to raise money for charities that helped Phoebe Coombes.Phoebe was close to death when she caught meningitis and had other complications in December, last year, but recovered and is now at home again.Around 30 people took part in the walk on Sunday, May 31, which went from Tick Tocks, in Axminster, which Phoebe attended before being taken ill, to its sister nursery in Charmouth. The walkers, who included Phoebe's mother, Becky, her grandmother and aunties, as well as staff from the nursery, who organised the event, and many friends, walked the seven miles, going via Cooks Lane, Monkton Wylde and Wootton Fitzpaine.Money raised by the event will go towards Devon Air Ambulance, which airlifted Phoebe to hospital, the hospital ward, where Phoebe spent much of her time during her illness, and the Ronald MacDonald children's charity, which funds accommodation at the hospital to allow parents to stay near their children.
