FORMER Axminster town mayor and vet Graham Godbeer gave a talk to the Devonshire Association's Axe Valley branch. Mr Godbeer, who joined the Coombefield Veterinary Hospital in the 1960s, spoke about animal care and confronted the question of euthanasia. He said: "A day too soon is better than a day too late."Despite his title, A Life in the Day of an Axe Valley Vet, Mr Godbeer started from 2,300 BC when the first written evidence of veterinary science was handed down on baked clay tablets. Inscriptions were in the Middle Eastern Sumerian language. However, the first British school for vets did not open in London until 1972.He concluded that vets today are expected to stay at school longer and read more - but that this was not always beneficial.
