A barbershop has scooped the prestigious 'Pride of Honiton' award for 2018.

Alan Rowe Barbering, in High Street, beat 23 other nominated businesses to clinch the gong.

Tony McCollum, chair of Honiton and District Chamber of Commerce, presented Alan Rowe MBE and his team with the award.

He also praised the community for their participation in this year’s award - which saw a record number of people get involved.

He said: “We are delighted that this year brought the highest number of nominees, as well as the highest number of votes cast in the eight-year history of the award.

“There were 28 businesses nominated, all of which were small independents and many hundreds of votes cast.

“This is testimony that the people of Honiton believe they receive the best service from the smaller local businesses and that is why so many independent shops and businesses thrive in Honiton.

“This award is entirely in the hands of the public and that gives the competition even more credence and gravitas.”

This year’s competition was a close one, with the popular barbershop finishing ahead of butchers Porkies of New Street and Thyme Café in High Street.

Alan, who also founded military charity The Baton, said: “All at the shop are absolutely delighted with the award it means a great deal to us that the service we try hard to provide is appreciated.

“We would like to thank everyone who voted for us and our loyal customers, the shop is a product of the people who regularly visit, the community spirit they have helped create over the last 26 years is incredible and something we are truly grateful for.”

Mr McCollum added: “Thank you to all the people of Honiton for taking part and supporting the independent local businesses and I look forward to the continued growth of the event for 2019.”

The Pride of Honiton award celebrates the very best of customer service offered by local businesses.

Previous winners include Honiton Sports Shop, Butterflies Beauty Studio, Lacemakers Café and House of Hair.

Long-established business A Dimond and Co won the inaugural award back-to-back in 2011 and 2012.
