Honiton's £2million community complex has been booked by more than 50 organisations including 15 regular weekly or monthly users.

Directors of Honiton’s community centre have celebrated a year of commercial success after the building marked its first birthday this month.

The £2million community complex has been booked by more than 50 organisations including 15 regular weekly or monthly users.

It has also hosted more than 70 events since it opened in April 2014.

The local image of the centre in East Devon is also strong, with 75 per cent of people attending events living within ten miles of Honiton, and 90 per cent within 20 miles.

John Burgess, one of the directors, said: “We have had a very successful first year.

“Although there are still people in Honiton who are reluctant to use the centre because historically they opposed it being here, there are many who have changed their mind and are enjoying the benefits of it.

“One objector who came to a few opening events donated £100 to the cause after seeing how important The Beehive is to the local community.”

The building has attracted a wealth of positive feedback and compliments from its users.

John added: “Visitors from other towns have been envious of Honiton’s success in obtaining such a fine building.”

Chairman of directors, Vernon Whitlock, said: “None of this would be possible without the hard work and support of our fantastic volunteers who have delivered a facility that we are all very proud of.

“These are very exciting times and we are expanding our links with local groups.

“The next few months will see regular cinema using state-of-the-art equipment, and we are indebted to Honiton Community Cinema for their hard work and vision in developing the audience.”
