The letter from Christine Potter, with regard to pay for East Devon Councillors, is way off the mark.

The letter from Christine Potter, with regard to pay for East Devon Councillors, is way off the mark. I believe that local councillors earn every penny.Elected members of all parties undertake a very difficult job in serving the people of East Devon in what is, mainly, a thankless task. They receive very little pay - the hourly rate is much less than the statutory minimum and the work completed is often done in the evenings and at weekends. Our current system of local government does work and we should not get rid of it purely because a few people, namely the Liberal Democrat Leader Brian Greenslade and his supporters, want much more power. As Christine Potter has mentioned pay, we need to remember in the June elections that the first act of the Liberal Democrats, in Devon County Council four years ago, was to put up their allowances - some by as much as 32 per cent.Conservative-led East Devon District Council publishes both pay and the expense rules which are quite clear for all the public to see.Dr H W Waterworth Honorary Alderman69 Burnard's Field RoadColyton
