Man uses hammer to smash windows after Giro fails to arrive.

A Honiton man took out his frustration on 11 panes of glass, which he smashed with a hammer, a court has heard.

Richard Anthony Sheridan, of King Street, received a conditional discharge for 12 months after pleading guilty to criminal damage charges at Central Devon Magistrates’ Court last week.

The court heard that on the morning of Sunday, March 25, the 46-year-old was seen passing the Job Centre and made threats to break the window.

He later returned with a small hammer and caused 652.88 worth of damage to 11 small panes of glass within two windows.

He was heard to say “Best ring the police” and waited at the scene until officers arrived.

Sonya Oldakowska, for the prosecution, said his explanation for his actions was that “They didn’t send my Giro. If it happens again, this is what happens to the window”.

She said: “It is appears the accused is dependent on alcohol and also takes medication which combined together can cause him to be aggressive.

“He did apologise for what happened.”

The court made no order for costs.
