Masses of interest at Honiton auction.

A vintage motorcycle got collectors all revved up when it went under the hammer in Honiton.

The Matchless motorcycle attracted masses of interest from bidders when it went up for auction at Chilcotts the auctioneers and valuers.

A spokesman for Chilcotts said: “There was masses of interest with three telephone bids, several commission bids and strong bidding in the room.

“The bike prompted lots of reminiscences among the older generation with discussions about its performance and specifications. Listening to these knowledgeable men chatting so fondly about times in their youth was delightful.”

It sold for £2,250, well above its estimate of £700 to £900.

Chilcotts told the Herald that the overall sale went ‘extremely well’ and 25 per cent of the lots were sold to internet buyers.

However, a Victoria carriage, built around 1900, did not sell at the specialist collectors’ sale on Saturday, June 8.

Other items that attracted the eyes of collectors were: a group of five George Medals, which sold for £5,000, a set of Beatles autographs which went for £680, and a Thunderbird 3 toy, which was sold for £140.

Postcards also proved to be popular and were sold for various prices ranging up to £700.
