BOMB disposal officers were contacted after a World War II shell was found in Lyme Regis.

Police officers were called to the scene between Lyme and Charmouth Close on Friday, July 24, after a member of the public alerted them.

PC Richard Winward said: "We took photos of the item, which were sent by text message to bomb disposal. Before they could reply, the tide came in and the officers retreated having marked where the item was.

"Later, bomb disposal confirmed that the item was part of a shell, but constructed of solid metal and contained no explosive."

The shell was recovered by police the next day at low tide. On Tuesday, bomb disposal collected the shell for disposal.
