PENSIONERS in Honiton are reeling after a shocking theft from the Senior Citizens' Centre. Members of the centre were enjoying a game of afternoon whist last Wednesday when a male was observed peering through glass in the door to Chapel Street. He then entered the building, waved his hands in the air while screaming and snatched a woman's bag. Disgusted eye witnesses told the Herald: "He was wearing a baseball cap and a rain coat." Honiton was in the grip of a storm when the unusual theft occurred in broad daylight. Phyllis Lacey, 89, who was among those playing whist when the bag was snatched, said: "There was a young man looking through the door. People didn't pay much attention. They just carried on playing whist. In an instant, he was in and out. He held his hands up, screamed mercy and took the bag." Honiton Town Council worker Cherrie Batty called police at around 4.12pm.
