EAST Devon District Council has admitted some ballot papers in Honiton have been sent to voters with incorrect postal voting statements.A spokesman said: "We have notified party agents and, as we hear from the public, we are double checking what papers they have and will then re-issue the correct postal voting statements. "There is ample time to rectify the situation before Polling Day and we are already doing so as we hear from the public."The main problem is in the Honiton St Michael's Ward, where we believe around 200 postal voting statements have been sent incorrectly."There is also a minor problem in West Hill, where we believe around 60 people are affected by a similar error."On Friday of last week, 13,312 ballot papers and postal voting statements were dispatched. This routine task was carried by 48 people under careful supervision but human error can sometimes creep in, especially when there are two elections and not every voter is eligible to vote in both. Unfortunately, no statements were missing or surplus at the end of the exercise, so it was not immediately apparent to checkers that the paperwork was out of sequence and that something was wrong.Due to the Bank Holiday weekend, it was not until this morning (Tuesday) that we became aware that there was a problem through phone calls from the public. We have received 24 calls so far but through checking back we are able to work out the scale of the problem.Returning Officer Mark Williams said: "This is unfortunate and I can only apologise to people for any inconvenience caused. We would ask the public to contact us as soon as possible and we are confident that everyone can have the right paperwork before Polling Day."The telephone number for the Elections Office is 01395 571 703.
