County council unlikely to implement pay and display charges in Honiton and Axminster following objections. Concerns about Seaton, where meters have already been installed.
CONTROVERSIAL plans to introduce on-street parking charges in town centres across East Devon look likely to be withdrawn following widespread condemnation from business leaders and local councils.
The Midweek Herald understands that Devon County Council is minded to halt the plan in the wake of widespread criticism and instead look again at traffic management in market towns across the county.
More than 2,000 people signed a petition opposing the move in Honiton and a planned meeting between business and civic leaders with a county councillor has been cancelled. The meeting was due to take place on Wednesday - the day the county’s cabinet was due to discuss the proposals.
The former mayor of Seaton, Sandra Semple, has expressed concerns about the resort, which has already had parking meters installed.
Will the meters now be removed?
