Organisers delighted with the turnout and the standard of this year’s entries

Enthusiastic crowds cheered on another superb carnival procession at Axminster on Saturday night.

Organisers said the number and quality of entries was well up to standard and generous spectators dug deep to keep the collection buckets rattling.

The parade was led by mayor Jeremy Walden and town crier Nick Goodwin, on foot, and included The Dorset Youth Marching Band, local firefighters, St John Ambulance, Karizma Majorettes and the Axminster Carnival queens’ float. There were also majorette troupes from Lyme Regis, Seaton and Honiton.

Colyton’s Nunsford Nutters took the best in procession award for their float Nutters Health Service – an irreverent look at the NHS.

Other trophy winners were:

Best costumes: Masquerade (Abbie Thomas).

Best walking entry: Woof (A and A CC).

Best drama entry: Kiss Me Kate (Axminster Operatic Society).

Best music: Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves (Generations CC).

Class winners:

Individual fancy dress: 1 Astrological (AJ CC), 2 Masquerade (Abbie Thomas).

Adult fancy dress (individual): 1 Flaming hot, hot, hot (Andy Tizzard), 2 Splish Splash (Lucy Thomas).

Fancy dress (pairs): 1 Woof (A ands A CC), 2 We’re Back (Inferno CC).

Decorated handcart: 1 Teddy Bear’s Picnic (Marchant family).

Decorated umbrella: 1 Willow Voysey ( E Voysey), 2 Jasmine Voysey (E Voysey), 3 Megan Voysey (E Voysey).

Walking groups: 1 Wings of Fire ( Cousins CC), 2 ‘Orrible Histories (Zem CC), 3, Target TAGB Tae Kwan-Do (G Waugh).

Trade: 1 Axminster Rural Services (M Hoare), 2 Saints Sled Dog Rescue (C Buck), 3 Axe Skip Hire (J Bostock).

Mini floats: 1 Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves (Generations CC), 2 All Over the World (Colyton Caterpillars), 3, Motorcycle Madness (Phil Armour CC).

Visiting carnival queens (East Devon circuit): 1 Home Sweet Home (Colyton Carnival), 2 Honiton Royal Party (Honiton Carnival), 3 Glitz and Glamour (Ottery St Mary Carnival), 4 Cinderella (Seaton Carnival).

Visiting carnival queens (open): 1 Fairy Queen (Dawlish Carnival), 2 Enchanted Garden (Bovey Tracey Carnival).

Open tableaux (30ft and under): 1 Chang (Ipplepen CC), 2 Pinball Wizards (The Muckslingers), 3 Santa’s Vacation (Harbourside CC).

Youth tableaux: 1 Caelum Infernum (South Brent CC), 2 Fly (K9 CC).

Local tableaux: 1 Wheels on the Bus (Rainbow Playgroup), 2 Circus (Axminster Lions), 3 RED Transport (R Dunsbury).

Open tableaux: 1 Legend of the Crystal Skull (Sidvale CC), 2 Venture Knight (Ottery St Mary VSU CC), 3 Ben and Holly’s Birthday Party (Groves CC).

Humorous tableaux: 1 Nutters Health Service (Nunsford Nutters CC), 2 Cirque Du Budleigh (Budleigh Salterton CC).
