Action packed week planned will culminate in the grand procession
Axminster Carnival Week gets under way on Sunday (September 9) with a bumper programme of fun events for all the family.
The action begins with a Walking Treasure Hunt which sets off from the senior citizen’s centre, Church Street, at 9am.
In the evening there is a pizza and quiz night at Le Pisani. Teams of two, four and six only - £10 per person to include a pizza for two to share.
Monday September 10:
Carnival Bingo at The Guildhall. All cash prizes. Doors open 7.30pm, eyes down 8pm. Book of 12 games £7. The interval flyer will be £20 one line, £30 two lines and £150 for a full house. Tickets for this are £2.
Thursday September 13:
Coffee morning at Church Rooms on Minster Green. Tea, coffee, cakes and a raffle - 8.30am to 12.30pm.
Whist Drive at Woodbury Hall, 7.30pm.
Saturday September 15:
Axminster Carnival illuminated procession sets off from Trafalgar Way at 8pm and travels on to West Street, then South Street to King Edwards Road and back to the Tesco roundabout.
This year the Mayor Cllr Jeremy Walden will lead the parade followed by the royal party – queen Kaya Long, princess Madeline Hammett and mini princess Ruby Hammett. The royal party is sponsored by Scott Rowe solicitors, Axminster.
Members of Axminster branch of the Royal British Legion will be marching from Trafalgar Way to Trinity Square to mark 100 years since the ending of the First World War. They will then fly flags while the carnival parade passes.
There will be music and other attractions in The Square from 5pm onwards. Trinity Square will be closed to traffic from 6am on Saturday and on procession night all pubs in the town will close at 11pm
Also anyone parking in the town at Tesco, West Street, South Street and Coombe Lane will not be able to drive away until after the parade is over,
Also Trafalgar Way from the roundabout to the A35 will be closed after the carnival has finished to allow floats to disperse.
Carnival Collecting:
Collecting bucket can be obtained from the Guildhall in West Street from 6pm on procession night and should be returned there at the end. Organisations can retain 25 per cent of what they collect.
The main collection float will again be sponsored by Axe Vale Skips and will be manned by Axminster Scouts.
All money collected on carnival night has to be given to charity.
All week:
Children’s colouring competition, fee entry. Prizes for winning entries include colouring goodies from Axminster Printers and a book from Archway Bookshop. Sheets can be collected from Co-Op South Street, Archway Bookshop, River Cottage Deli and Kitchen and Axminster Printers.
Misplaced articles competition from September 8 to 16. Entry forms from the Sweet Shop, library and W.G. Potter. Free entry cash prizes.
