Record amount of rubbish cleared by an army of volunteers

Almost 200 volunteers helped give Seaton a facelift during Saturday’s annual Big Clean.

Oorganised by the local council’s town development team, a record 60plus bags of rubbish were collected, including numerous large pieces of wood washed up on the beach during recent storms.

Areas tidied included the Beach, West Walk, Fisherman’s Gap, Promenade area, Fore Street, Queen Street, Cross Street and Harbour Road.

The clean-up was well supported by Seaton businesses including Pebbles café who hosted the start and gave free bacon/veggie baps to volunteers.

Chris Reed, of Frank Property, this year’s lead sponsor,

attended with his team, cleaning up the beach and streets alongside other sponsors Seaton Tramway, Seaton Visitor Centre Trust, Seaton and District Chamber of Commerce, and many local teams including Axe Valley Runners, Axe Valley Pedallars, The Lions, Seaton Baptist Church, Tesco’s, Axe Valley Wetlands team and hundreds of children and parents from Seaton Primary School.

All three major prizes were won by teams from Seaton Primary School.

The Golden Dustbin award worth £132, for the team that collect the most rubbish, went to Bobby Rooke and Ethan Andersen who collected more than 10 bags of litter from the beach. The most interesting piece of rubbish prize, worth £65, was won by Stephen Johns and the ugliest piece of rubbish prize, worth £62, judged by Llewellyn Nicholls from media sponsor Midweek Herald was won by “trashbusters team’, the Tuckley family.
