RESIDENTS in Jerrard Close, Honiton, say it is only a matter of time before somebody is killed by a vehicle overshooting a public car park - after an accident at the weekend.

A garden wall was demolished and five vehicles damaged when a Porsche, driven by a 63-year-old Axminster woman, spun out of control last Saturday afternoon.

The accident happened just yards from a children's play area.

Tony and Christine Bennett, whose garden wall and Proton car were wrecked in the accident, are calling on East Devon District Council to erect a barrier to protect pedestrians.

They returned home from a shopping trip to find the road closed by police.

Tony, 61, and Christine, 59, say they have witnessed five similar accidents in the 26 years they have lived in Jerrard Close.

"There's no way a pedestrian would have been able to get out of the way. It was a good job it was raining and nobody was about," said Christine.

Tony said: "The Porsche overshot the car park boundary, spun round at a 90 degree angle and hit and demolished our garden wall.

"My car was also severely damaged."

The Porsche then continued into Jerrard Crescent, where a further three vehicles sustained damage.

Former Mayor of Honiton Bob Shepherd went to the aid of the driver, who was uninjured but very shocked.

It is understood that the Porsche sustained damage to its undercarriage when it overshot the car park's boundary, meaning the driver, who had borrowed her son's car, was unable to control it

Residents in Jerrard Close say there was little the woman could do after the car overshot the car park boundary and have described the incident as a pure accident.

A spokesman for East Devon District Council said: "We have instructed our engineer to carry out a risk assessment.

"This is the first time we have been made aware of such an incident at this location.
