A VETERAN of the Suez Crisis in the early '50s is looking for new members to join the Canal Zoners. The group, which meets in Exeter, is for anyone who served in the forces, Merchant Navy, NAAFI, Church Army and the like, in the Suez Canal Zone or other areas of Egypt and Palestine.John Chambers, 73, from Cullompton, is convinced there must be veterans living in East Devon, who are unaware of the association's existence. He said: "If people remember serving in the likes of Fayid, Moascar, Ismailia, Kasfareet and Deversoir, then they are the people we would like to hear from."Most of our members are in their 70s but they have all got a connection with Suez."It is really a social club but we have all got a common link."He said he had become a member several years ago after his daughter encouraged him to go along. The group has outings, guest speakers and meets on the second Monday of each month at the White Ensign Club in South Street, Exeter.Anyone interested in joining the Canal Zoners can call Mr Chambers on (01884) 32460.
