New locally based service will give sufferers and their families access to help and advice

A Cancer Information Café has opened in Axminster.

Based at the town’s Health and Wellbeing Centre in Chard Street, it hosts all the services offered in East Devon and the borders to help sufferers and their families.

The staff have been trained by Macmillan to give information about cancer services on cancer types, their treatments and emotional and listening support.

The Café primarily provides leaflets from Macmillan, Cancer Research UK, Hospiscare, FORCE, ARC and Axminster Care Service, along with benefits information and advice from support groups.

There is also a great selection on meditation, yoga groups, and complementary therapy advice, staying healthy and individual case studies.

Funding help has come from Macmillan, with a £500 grant, and the Axminster Rotary Club which has donated a further £351.74 for the new chairs and tables needed.

The cancer café has been set up as a confidential and safe place to discuss what people need to know. There are 12 volunteers trained by Macmillan of which four are complementary therapists. These volunteers will be on hand to assist with any questions.

The café is open every Thursday afternoon from tomorrow (November 14) from 1.30pm to 4pm with a free information service, Wifi, computer access with personal support, where needed, and refreshments. This service is open to everyone who has been affected by cancer or anyone who would just like to know more.
