DONATIONS of mobility scooters from families in Honiton and Whimple have enabled the Joe Gilson Mobility Scheme to help improve the lives of two more local residents.

Hilary Constantinou, of Whitebridges, and Jeremiah O'Brien, of Badger Close, were presented with the scooters by the late Mr Gilson's widow, Carol, last week. She was accompanied by her grandson, Luke Doby.

Hilary has struggled to get around after suffering a major back injury in a car accident.

She underwent a spinal fusion operation last year, in a bid to improve her mobility, with limited success.

Walking has proved difficult and she still suffers severe pain.

She was nominated to receive a scooter by her partner, Barry Miles.

Jeremiah is 87 and found accessing town centre facilities extremely difficult from his home, which is a quarter of a mile away.

He has lived in Honiton for 65 years and has nothing but praise for the Joe Gilson Mobility Scheme.

"Carol was most helpful and arranged everything at my convenience," he said. "As promised, the scooter was delivered within two days.

"I was given full instructions regarding every aspect of the working of the scooter.

"My sincere thanks to Carol, the Midweek Herald and helpers for their wonderful act of kindness."

A further two scooters are still available for worthy recipients.
