CONTROVERSIAL plans for a restaurant, exhibition area and water sports activity centre on Seaton s border with Axmouth have been given the go-ahead.

CONTROVERSIAL plans for a restaurant, exhibition area and water sports activity centre on Seaton's border with Axmouth have been given the go-ahead.

East Devon District Council has approved the proposal for redevelopment of The Boatyard site, in The Harbour, as part of Seaton's regeneration scheme.

Councillors said The Axe Riverside Company's plans would help the town move on and attract visitors.

Cllr Ray Franklin said: "Seaton is crying out for regeneration. This could be a catalyst for them. People have been patient waiting for something to happen."

The decision ends a four year long saga, which was supported by Seaton Town Council, but opposed by Axmouth Parish Council.

Axmouth councillors recommended the application be refused in its present form - fearing it would lead to overdevelopment in the village. But, they argued, they should benefit from funding if planning goes ahead.

The application includes a building with a restaurant, reception/exhibition area, water sports activity centre and residential units - with a maximum of 260 square metres floor area.

EDDC received six letters objecting to the application, citing the height of the building, impact on and loss of privacy on the listed building Toll House, and impact on the boat building business, among its reasons.

One letter of support was put forward, saying that regeneration is needed, but that the plans should be amended.

Planning officers recommended the proposal be approved on the provision 7,395.73 is contributed for public open space and recreation in Seaton, and public access is available to the site.

The application would also have to meet numerous conditions - such as ensuring adequate drainage is provided and a programme of archaeological work is approved.
