Mrs Scaife, 50, was there to carry a wreath to the Cenotaph on behalf of the Queen Alexandra's Royal Naval Nursing Association.

"I was a little nervous I wouldn't do a good job of handing over the wreath but, in the end, it all went well. I found it a very moving occasion," she said.

"There were moments when the mood lightened as chaps in some of the other contingents clapped as we passed and cheered us girls along.

"It really was a wonderful day and one that I will remember for the rest of my life.
