OperaPlus returned to Holyrood Academy in Chard to put on a show with local youngsters.

They joined forces with the award-winning Holyrood Choir and primary school singers from Buckland St Mary, Combe St. Nicholas, Neroche and Ashill.

They put on two showings of ‘The Team Mascot’, an adaptation of ‘The Daughter of the Regiment’ by Donizetti - a story of passion, laughter and football for all the family.

In the few months preceding the performances, the Opera company, Jackdaws, ran several workshops and rehearsals with the cast who then went on to learn their individual chorus numbers back at school with Holyrood’s Trevor Lloyd Jones.

On the nights, the students were mesmerised by the voices of the professional singers, and many parents were bowled over as well.

The cast even managed to demonstrate their skills at dancing ‘The Floss’.

Mr Lloyd Jones said: “It was a rare treat to participate in an actual opera and to work with young, energetic, committed professional opera singers. I hope the audiences were inspired to watch more.

“Thank you to everyone who supported the event and special thanks to Saffron van Zvanenberg from OperaPlus for bringing this opportunity to Holyrood Academy.”
