Indie Bright, whose grandad Allan died in June 2017, will hold the special cookout on April 20 - the same day she is jumping out of a plane in a charitable skydive.

Allan, who owned Allan Bright Sawmills and Son in Monkton, died aged 71 after fighting dementia for four years.

As well as being a respected tradesman in Honiton, he was known for raising in excess of £13,000 throughout his life for several charities, including Hospiscare, Devon Air Ambulance and several children’s organisations.

Indie, 21, says she hopes the barbecue in April will make her granddad proud.

She added: “My granddad loved barbecues and doing charity events.

“He was a very charitable man and doing this barbecue is something I know he would have loved to have done.

“I think he would have loved to know I was following in his footsteps too.”

Indie hopes to raise around £660 through the barbecue, of which 200 tickets are on sale for, and her skydive.

All proceeds from both events will go to Alzheimers’ Society, a care and research charity for people with dementia and their carers.

Indie said: “I have gone big with this barbecue – there will be a bar and a disco dome. We will also be raffling off prizes and experiences on the night.”

Tickets to the barbecue, which will be held at Allan Bright Sawmills in Old Chard Road, near Offwell, from 5pm to late, are £5 for adults and £2.50 for children.

Indie said she has already raised £300 from donations towards her skydive, and is hopeful of surpassing her £660 target.

She added: “My granddad always did so much for everybody in the community.

“He was a big inspiration to his grandchildren. He was always there when we needed him.

“This barbecue will hopefully be as amazing as ones he held in the past. I want him to look down on me and be proud.”

Tickets to the barbecue can be purchased at Allan Bright Sawmills.
