A FENITON man got behind the wheel while almost twice the legal drink-drive limit after he discovered his wife had cheated on him, a court heard.

Musa Ozturk, 44, pleaded guilty to drink-driving in a silver Vauxhall Corsa on the A30, on January 18.

Prosecuting, Phil Alcock said Ozturk's car had been seen swerving and he was "somewhat slurred and unsteady" when police stopped him.

Central Devon Magistrates' Court heard how Ozturk, of Salisbury Close, had 69 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath. The legal limit is 35.

In mitigation, Peter Woodley said Ozturk rarely drank alcohol but had reacted when he heard his wife had been cheating on him. Ozturk had received the news via a text message from another man.

Mr Woodley said: "He's sorry for what he's done. He has a child from the relationship dependant on him.

"He's just in a terrible situation at the moment."

He said Ozturk, who holds a Turkish driving licence, had been in the country for around eight years and never claimed benefits.

He said he had previously been helping out at a friend's shop, but was currently unemployed.

Ozturk told the court that he and his wife had been together for seven years, married for two of those, and that she had "done something wrong". He said: "I'm so sorry. My whole life, I didn't drink."

He was disqualified from driving for 18 months, with the possibility to reduce it by four and half months with a rehabilitation driver's course.

He was ordered to pay 115 in costs and a victim surcharge.
