Consumer Direct South West has warned householders to be wary of clothing collections from home.
Charities often use doorstep collections to gather donations directly from people's homes.
Consumer Direct suggests, however, that everyone reads the plastic bag seeking such donations very carefully as collections may be organised by commercial operators, who sell the donated items for profit.
Reputable charity collections carry the charity registration number and many will also display the Association of Charity Shops kitemark.
If you have any doubts about a leaflet asking for donations, you can contact the Charity Commission helpline on 0845 300 0218 to confirm the registration of the advertised charity.
