SEATON'S 30-year-old chess club is calling on people who want to be 'mentally stimulated'.The 10-member club, which meets every Wednesday at the social club, has players who travel from across the Axe Valley and take part in various competitions.Club chairman Brynley Newton said: "The game would appeal to anyone. "Some take it very seriously, others not quite so seriously. "Some play during the winter and the club doesn't close for summer. Some play all the year round. "It's one game that isn't weather dependent. "You don't need any particular skills to play, but an analytical mind helps."Member Jon Underwood added: "England is one of the strongest chess playing countries, and Devon one of the strongest counties - maybe because we have the weather for it. We were county champions three years ago."We could do with a few younger players and are trying to get schools involved."He said the game could be as much about psychology as skill, and rumours of intimidation abounded at competitions during the Cold War. But he assured the Herald they played fair at the club.
